CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern rallied from an early 8-0 deficit, scoring 14 unanswered runs in a 15-11 win over visiting Western Carolina on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. Game two of the three game series is set for Saturday at 1 pm.
Junior outfielder Justin Fyle tallied four hits and two RBI while first baseman Anthony Hayes had two hits and four RBI as the Bucs banged out a season-high 18 hits in the game. Right fielder Wes Brundridge added three hits and three RBI while shortstop Helio Burgos added three hits, the first three-hit game of his career.
Charleston Southern improved to 5-9 on the season, winning their third straight game. Western Carolina dropped to 4-3 overall on the season.
Western Carolina's Steven Strausbaugh belted a pair of two-run homeruns in the first two innings as the Catamounts roughed up CSU starter Josh Evans for eight runs in the first two innings.
Charleston Southern answered with five runs in the third and took control of the game with four runs in the fourth and a five-run fifth.
Junior Joey Timmerman worked two innings to earn the victory, improving to 1-0 on the season. Chris Widing pitched the ninth, inheriting two runners with no outs and retiring three straight hitters to earn his first career save.
Taking the loss for Western Carolina was Caleb McConnell, who allowed eight runs (seven earned) in 1 1/3 innings of work.
