CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Ryan Sowers pitched seven solid innings and junior firstbaseman Anthony Hayes had two RBI as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers won their fourth straight game, defeating Western Carolina, 7-4, at Buccaneer Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sowers (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. Ryan Rowland and Mike Mead closed the game with Mead earning his first save of the season.
Charleston Southern improves to 6-9 on the season while Western Carolina falls to 4-4. WCU starter Tyler Sexton (2-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) in five innings of work.
Charleston Southern tallied 12 hits on the day with rightfielder Wes Brundridge, John Mark Cleaveland and Chris Krogmeier picking up two hits each.
For the second straight day, CSU fell behind early as Western Carolina scored three runs in the second inning. CSU answered with runs in four consecutive innings, scoring three in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. The Bucs put the game away with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
