CHARLESTON, S.C. - Visiting St. John's broke open a close game by scoring in five consecutive innings en route to an 1-1 win over Charleston Southern on Tuesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
St. John's improved to 5-4 on the season while Charleston Southern falls to 6-11. CSU opens Big South Conference play this weekend at Radford University.
After three scoreless innings, St. John's scored a run in the fourth, followed by two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Red Storm put the game away with a five-run eighth.
Jared Yecker allowed five hits and one run to earn the win for St. John's, his first of the season. CSU starter Ryan Rowland (2-1) took the loss, allowing one run on five hits in four innings.
Bryan Dirr and Jeff Grantham had three hits each for the Red Storm, which belted out 16 hits on the day.
CSU second baseman Ryan Smart had two hits for the Bucs.
