CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern failed to hold a late lead as The Citadel rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an 8-5 win over the Buccaneers on Tuesday night at Joe Riley Park.
Charleston Southern drops to 8-13 on the season and entertains another city rival, College of Charleston, on Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
CSU fell behind early as the Bulldogs scored three runs in the first two innings for a 3-0 lead. The Bucs, however, scored five runs in the top of the third, highlighted by Keith Stewart's mammoth two-run homerun to left.
The Citadel loaded the bases in the eighth with one out when Trent Weathers doubled down the rightfield line to give the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead. Brady Mashak followed with a two-run double to left center for the final margin.
CSU's third pitcher of the night, freshman Andrew White, took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season.
Catcher John Mark Cleaveland and first baseman Anthony Hayes had two hits each for the Buccaneers, who struck out 13 times on the night.
