CHARLESTON, S.C. - Coastal Carolina starting pitcher Mike Valter limited Charleston Southern to three hits over eight innings and David Sappelt and Matt Sutton homered as the Chanticleers defeated CSU, 6-1, in game one of a three-game Big South series at Buccaneer Field on Friday.
Valter (1-1) struck out six and allowed just one run in eight innings of work, leaving in the ninth with runners on first and third. Sappelt's blast to left center gave CCU a 1-0 lead in the third and Sutton's two-run shot to right was part of a three-run sixth that pushed Coastal Carolina's lead to 4-0.
CSU starter DJ Throneburg (1-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Coastal Carolina improved to 9-14 overall and 3-1 in Big South play while the Buccaneers dropped to 9-18 overall, 3-4 in league play.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game slated for 11 am. Senior right-hander Ryan Sowers will start game one while senior lefty Josh Evans is scheduled as the game two starter.
