Bucs split doubleheader with Coastal Carolina on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior leftfielder Justin Fyle and junior third baseman Sean Doherty tallied three hits each and senior left-hander Josh Evans picked up his first win of the season as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers defeated Coastal Carolina, 9-5, in game two of a Big South Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Coastal Carolina captured game one, 5-3, and took the series, two games to one. Coastal Carolina ends the weekend at 10-15 overall and 4-2 in conference play while CSU ends the day with a 10-19 record overall, 4-5 in Big South play.

Evans improved to 1-4 on the season with his best outing of the season. Evans allowed three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over six innings of work. Junior lefty Ryan Rowland allowed four hits over the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.

CSU trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning before posting four runs in the fourth to tie the game at five. The Buccaneers added three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to secure the victory.

The Buccaneers tallied 13 hits in the victory as Fyle and designated hitter David Perkins picked up two RBI each. Freshman shortstop Mark Perry added two hits in the win.

Coastal Carolina centerfielder David Sappelt had four hits and designated hitter David Anderson added three for the Chanticleers, who picked up 11 hits in game three.

CCU's third pitcher, Kevin Salmon, took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season. Salmon allowed four runs on six hits in three innings of work.

Coastal Carolina captured game one of the day with a 5-3 victory. The Chanticleers led 3-0 after four innings before the Bucs made it 3-2 in the sixth. CCU put the game away with a two-run eighth.

Coastal starter Austin Fleet earned the win, improving to 2-1. Fleet allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings on six hits. CSU starter Ryan Sowers (2-3) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in six innings.

Fyle also had three hits and two RBI in game one while Doherty and second baseman Ryan Smart had two hits each.

Charleston Southern returns to action at College of Charleston on Wednesday night at 5 pm. The Bucs host High Point in a Big South Conference series next weekend.
