CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers (11-21, 5-6) battled back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat High Point 8-4 in the first game of a Big South Conference double-header Saturday at Buccaneer Field.

Ryan Sowers (3-3) picked up the complete-game win for CSU. After giving up three runs on three hits in the first, Sowers settled down, allowing just one more run on four hits the rest of the game.

Wes Brundridge paced CSU offensively for the second straight game, going three-for-four, scoring three runs and recording four RBI. Brundridge also went deep for the second time in as many games, his third homerun of the season.

Trailing 4-2 in the fifth inning, Brundridge led off the inning getting hit by a pitch followed by a Justin Fyle single. A throwing error on the pitcher put runners in scoring position. Neil Krock scored one run on a pinch-hit grounder, and a single to center by Chris Krogmeier tied the game 4-4.

CSU would take the lead in the sixth when John Mark Cleaveland and Ryan Smart each hit a single before Brundridge homered to left center. The Bucs would never look back as they tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Game One Box

For the third straight game the Panthers jumped out to an early lead, putting five on the board in the top of the first in game two. They would increase their lead to 9-2 after three innings of play. The Bucs battled back, getting the score to a manageable 10-7 deficit going into the ninth inning.

The hope of a CSU comeback was dashed when High Point put four insurance runs on the board in the top of the ninth. CSU loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning and High Point helped the cause walking in two runners cutting the lead to 14-9. A short fly ball to the shortstop would end the rally and the game.

CSU will host the Citadel on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
