BIRMINGHAM, AL - Charleston Southern junior outfielder Justin Fyle picked up two hits to set a new school single season record for hits in a season but the Buccaneers fell to Birmingham Southern, 8-5, in Big South Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon.
Fyle now has 78 hits this season, breaking the record of 77. Fyle has two games remaining in this season and teammate Wes Brundridge, also a junior, is close behind with 76 hits. Brundridge did not pick up a hit on Saturday.
With the loss, CSU falls to 17-37 overall and 8-15 in conference play. The Bucs wrap up conference play on Sunday. CSU needs a win on Sunday to remain alive for the sixth and final spot in the Big South tournament. The Bucs will be eliminated from contention with a loss or a win by UNC Asheville. CSU has lost a season-high eight consecutive games.
Centerfielder Chris Krogmeier had three hits for Charleston Southern while Lionel Greene and Keith Stewart had a pair of RBI each. Stewart hit his fifth homerun of the season.
Senior Ryan Sowers took the loss for the Bucs, falling to 5-6 on the season. Sowers allowed eight runs on 15 hits in 7 1/3 innings of work.
Fyle enters Sunday with his sights set on another school record. He needs two RBI in the final two games of the season to eclipse the single-season school mark of 47.Related Item: Box Score
