CHARLESTON, S.C. – A three-run eighth inning capped a late comeback as Charleston Southern (4-0) completed the sweep of Delaware State (0-3), Sunday afternoon at Collins Park.
Offensively for the Bucs, Wes Brundridge, Justin Fyle and Chris Krogmeier each recorded two hits on the day, with Brundridge coming around to score twice. The Hornets tallied just five hits on the day, to the Bucs' 10.
A four-pitch walk to start the game came back to haunt CSU starter Ryan Rowland, as centerfielder Jim Johnson worked his around to score and put the Hornets up 1-0 early on. Delaware State would add to their lead in the second, when Randy Boyer doubled into right-center, scoring two batters later on a Johnson single.
Designated hitter David Perkins doubled to lead off the fourth and scored on grounder to the short stop by Mark Perry to put CSU on the board. Center fielder Chris Krogmeier followed up with a single, and after stealing second, scored on a single by third baseman Will Rodriguez to tie the game 2-2 going into the fifth inning.
The Hornets answered again, scoring one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to lead the game 4-2. The Bucs' defense would step up and not let them score again, however.
Right fielder Wes Brundridge started things off in the seventh inning scoring on a single by catcher Stephen Herzog. Herzog advanced to second on a pass ball and scored on a Anthony Hayes single to tie the game 4-4.
The Bucs continued their rally in the eighth with Perry reaching on a walk, stealing second and scoring on a single by Brundridge. Pinch runner Nathan Gearles and Brundridge scored on a double by Justin Fyle to give the Bucs a 7-4 lead.
Senior Ryan Rowland started the game for Charleston Southern, pitching four innings and allowing two runs. Relievers Eric McGough and Joey Timmerman combined for three innings, with McGough allowing two runs to score. Junior reliever Payton Tweddale (1-0) earned the win for the Buccaneers pitching two scoreless innings.
