CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former secondary coach Darrell Perkins has rejoined the Charleston Southern coaching staff as the defensive coordinator after having spent one year as the special teams and linebackers coach at Northern Colorado.

“We are very excited to have Darrell Perkins back on staff,” said Head Coach Jay Mills. “He is without question, first of all an exception person. He is a man of unquestioned character and integrity. Secondly, he is an outstanding football coach. He is a perfect fit for Charleston Southern. We’ll strive to improve each young man under his leadership spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally.”

Perkins coached at Charleston Southern for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, serving as the secondary coach and special team’s coordinator.

Prior to his first stint at CSU, Perkins served as the secondary coach/special teams coordinator for Ferris State University, where he spent two seasons.

He is a graduate of the University of Wyoming and served as a graduate assistant at Purdue University from 2000-02, where he helped lead the Boilermakers to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 33 years.

As a player, Perkins was a two-year starter at running back where he helped lead the Cowboys of Wyoming to back-to-back Western Athletic Conference Championships.

Perkins is married to the former Elena Zbitskaya.
