CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers (7-5) jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage behind the strong arm of D.J. Throneburg, and held on for the 4-3 victory over Cleveland State (2-4), Sunday afternoon at Collins Park.
Throneburg had a perfect game through four innings, and ended the day giving up just four hits and three walks in 8.1 innings. He was charged with all three Viking runs. Payton Tweddale came in for his first save of the season, closing the game out with a pair of strikeouts.
Anthony Hayes had three of the Buccaneer’s eight hits, scoring twice. He also helped score one of the two runs that CSU plated in the third inning, as his single went under the glove of the right fielder and rolled to the wall. Hayes ended the play at third base, and freshman Will Rodriguez scored from first.
The Bucs plated a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings to jump in front by four. An error on a ground ball to first allowed the Vikings to get on the board in the seventh.
Looking to go the distance, Throneburg entered the ninth inning and quickly got the first out. A pair of singles with a walk in between loaded the bases, bringing Tweddale into the game in relief.
The Buccaneers will remain home as they face Furman at 2 p.m.
