CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers got back on the winning track as they beat Maryland Easter Shore 5-1, Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. The victory broke a four-game winning streak for CSU, and was the second-straight loss for the Hawks. CSU improved to 12-15 on the season, while UMES fell to 3-16 with the loss.
Starter Cody Higgins pitched well, going 7.2 innings, giving up just one run on eight hits, striking out four. Payton Tweddale earned his third save of the season as he finished things up facing just four batters, striking two of them out. The Bucs tallied 11 hits, with Justin Fyle, Anthony Hayes and Will Rodriguez each notching two hits.
For the Hawks, Jamar Cadejuste took the loss, going to 0-4 on the season as he allowed four of the five Buccaneer runs.
CSU scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, as the first three batters reached safely. A sacrifice fly by Stephen Herzog scored Brundridge, who drew a leadoff walk to start things going. Fyle moved the third on a wild pitch, and came around to score on a single to short by Chris Krogmeier.
The lead was cut in half in the third as UMES scored their only run with three singles, scoring James Walls.
CSU would extend their lead out to 4-1 with two runs in the fifth, thanks to an RBI double by Herzog, scoring Hayes from first base. After Herzog stole third base, his eighth stolen base of the season, a sacrifice fly by Stewart plated the run.
Charleston Southern tacked on one more in the eighth when a leadoff walk by reliever Dustin Longchamps to Krogmeier came around on a single to right field by Rodriguez.
The Bucs will play four games against Brown University this weekend, starting with a double header at Buccaneer Field on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
