CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the first time in the four-game series, the Bucs struck first, led by a solo homerun by Keith Stewart and the Bucs never trailed as they beat Brown 7-6, Monday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
Six of the 10 Buccaneer hits came from the top five spots in the lineup as the Bucs out hit Brown for the first time in the series. Stewart and Stephen Herzog each scored a pair of runs, while Herzog led the way with three RBI.
On the mound, reliever Joey Timmerman earned the win, his first decision of the season as the Bucs used five pitchers to hold down the Bears. Closer Payton Tweddale pitched the ninth, earning his fourth save of the season, and moving the Bucs to a perfect 12-0 record when leading after eight innings.
The solo shot by Stewart sparked a two-out rally for the Bucs as they added one more run in the bottom of the first, taking advantage on a throwing error by the catcher that advanced Stephen Herzog to third after his ninth stolen base of the season. He would score on an RBI single by Anthony Hayes.
After surrendering a run in each of the next two innings, the Bucs found themselves tied in the bottom of the fourth. That’s when the Bucs used four singles and a homerun by Herzog, his sixth of the year, to break open the game and take a 7-2 lead.
Brown would answer with four of their own, three of them coming on a homerun by Jeff Dietz to climb back within one, but David Perkins, Mike Mead and Tweddale combined to shut them down and clinch the victory.
The Bucs will get back into Big South Conference play as they travel to league-leading Coastal Carolina for a three-game set, starting Friday at 6 p.m. Related Item: Box Score
