CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers committed seven errors in a 13-3 loss to UNC Asheville, Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. CSU dropped their fifth-straight game, falling to 13-23 on the season, and 0-7 in the Big South Conference. UNCA improves to 12-21 on the season with a 3-4 mark in the Conference, having now won at least one game in each Big South series this season.
Ryan Rowland took the loss on the mound as he gave up six runs, three earned, on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. The Bucs gave up just four earned runs as they gave up 17 hits and 13 runs to UNCA, both season highs for the Bulldogs. Sean Doherty and Chris Krogmeier each had two hits as the Bucs had just eight hits on the day. John Whited led the Bulldogs with four hits, while Kyle Smith scored three times for UNCA.
The Bucs put together a rally in the fourth, started with a lead-off walk by Justin Fyle. Fyle would come around to score on a Chris Krogmeier RBI single. Mark Perry followed up with an RBI single of his own, scoring Anthony Hayes to cut the lead to 3-2.
A solo homerun by Elliott Arrington pushed UNCA back up 4-2 and from there, they would extend their lead to as much as five at 7-2. The Bulldogs then exploded in the eighth, batting through the order and adding six runs to take the 13-2 lead.
CSU added one in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases, scoring Wes Brundridge on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Hayes.
The two teams will face each other again in a double header, Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
