ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Bucs scored late, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Bucs fell 5-1, Friday night. The Bucs fall to 16-28 and 2-11 in the Big South, while Winthrop goes to 23-19, 9-1 in the Big South.
The Bucs struggled at the plate against a solid outing by Alex Wilson, who gave up just four hits in a complete game, striking out 10 batters. Stephen Herzog had two of the hits, including a RBI single in the top of the ninth. The Bucs countered with Cody Higgins, who pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits, striking out four.
A wild pitch by Higgins was the difference early as Phil Carey scored from third to put Winthrop up 1-0. A two-run homerun by John Murrian and a RBI double by Carey extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth. The Eagles further extended the lead in the eighth with an RBI double by Tommy Lentz, making it 5-0.
CSU finally broke through scoring once in the top of the ninth as Mark Perry led off the inning with a single to right. He advanced to third on a passed ball and wild pitch, allowing him to score on the single by Herzog.
