CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers scattered eight hits, but fell 8-2 to The Citadel, Tuesday evening at Riley Park. The loss drops Charleston Southern to 19-33 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 29-23.
Ryan Rowland took the loss on the mound for Charleston Southern, while Chris McGuiness earned the victory for the Bulldogs. Andrew White pitched three innings of relief, with T.J. Green shutting them down for one inning. Wes Brundridge and Chris Krogmeier each had two hits to pace the CSU offense, with Brundridge recording the only extra base hit of the day.
The Bulldogs continued to hit the long-ball as Chris Swauger hit his 11th, and the team’s 56th homerun of the season to put The Citadel up 2-0. A pair of outstanding plays in the infield on line drives, one by Lionel Greene, and one by Anthony Hayes, helped get the Bucs out of the inning with no further damage.
The Citadel would add three runs to their lead in the third as Ryan Altman scored two on a double, and then came around to score on a single by Matt Arnold.
Charleston Southern finally threatened in the fourth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Stephen Herzog knocked one run in on a sacrifice fly to right field, and a base hit by Mark Perry scored another, cutting the lead to 5-2.
The Citadel got one back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Swauger.
The two teams played to a draw for the four innings before a wild pitch scored one Bulldog, and a sacrifice fly by Chance Smith scored another to make it 8-2.
Both teams will play their final Conference series, starting Thursday before starting their respective League tournaments on Tuesday. Related Item: Box Score |
