Football Battles Heat From Day OneAugust 6, 2007By CSU Sports Information CHARLESTON, S.C. – With heat advisories all over the county, Charleston Southern athletes braved the heat during the first day of practice for the 2007 football season.
The first practice consisted of skills testing, as well as normal drills, and Head Coach Jay Mills was pleased with the start, but realizes it was just day one.
“I think you do your team a disservice if you don’t approach every season with the expectation of competing for a championship. At the same time, I think you do the same if you don’t speak the truth in love, and we have a long way to get there. I am confident that this team can work hard and get to the point we want to be at.”
The Bucs return a core group on both sides of the ball, and will look to the veterans to help lead the way to what the Bucs hope can be a third-straight winning season, having finished 9-2 last year.
“Losing the guys that we did, it causes more people to step out into leadership roles, including the seniors,” said senior running back Kenny Harper.
Senior linebacker, and defensive player of the year candidate Jada Ross agreed. “We have good athletes, and they will be called on to step up and fill the spots we have. Having won the past few years has helped. You have to have a winning attitude and that helps lead the younger guys and makes them work harder.”
The Buccaneers will continue their hard work in preparation for their Sept. 1 date against The Citadel.
