Banana Split Series, Day One:November 3, 2007By Head Coach Jason Murray CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneer baseball team got together to settle things, Friday, as they divided into two teams, the Blue and Gold squads, in the first-annual Banana Split Series. The Blue squad proved too much on day one, but there is still time for the Gold team to come back.
Game One Notes:
In game one of the Banana Split series, the Blue team took total control both offensively and on the mound for a 9-1 win over the Gold team. Senior RHP Cody Higgins pitched five scoreless innings and giving up only two hits. Taking over the sixth & seventh inning was Eric McGough, who went two innings and giving up one run, two hits, and striking out two gold hitters.
Michael Obuchowski had three RBI off two hits to pace the Blue team. Also recording multiple hits was first basman Nick Chinners with two singles. The following Blue players recorded one hit: Taylor Black, Will Rodriguez, Jake Cox. One of the highlights for the Blue team was freshman RHP Stew Brase recording his 1st fall hit.
The Gold team’s starting pitcher, junior RHP Brandon Roberts went five innings, allowing five walks and giving up three runs. Freshman RHP Jesse Cadenhead took over the sixth and seventh. The Gold team unraveled in the last two innings allowing six runs. The Gold team’s five errors, pitchers giving 10 free bases, and lack of offense couldn’t overcome the Blue team’s attack.
Game Two Notes:
The second game of the World Series was a better executed game by both teams. The Blue team takes a 2-0 lead in the series with a 5-2 win.
Two junior LHP’s took the mound for game two of the Banana Split. For the Blue Team Andrew White and for the Gold team TJ Green. Andrew White pitched a great five innings allowing no runs on five hits which was enough to help the Blue team jump to a lead on TJ Green. Green did a great job of keeping the game close for four innings by allowing only three runs off Jake Cox’s two RBI single and Obuchowski’s RBI fielder’s choice. However, in the fifth the Blue team got two more runs of Green before giving the sixth to freshman Anthony Markham. Markham pitched one inning without allowing a run.
Again, the Blue team surprised everyone with two secret weapons coming into the game offensively. Junior RHP Eric McGough and Senior RHP Cody Higgins each recorded their 1st fall hits!
For the Gold team offensively, junior SS Cory Trudell was 2-2 with a triple and run scored and junior RHP/2B Brandon Roberts recorded two hits. Also recording a hit was Brantley Meier, Tyler Thornburg, Jesse Cadenhead, and Scotty Radabaugh.
The series will resume Wednesday, November 7, at 2:45pm for Game 3.
