Phase One of Building Buccaneer BaseballAugust 3, 2008By CSU Sports Information CHARLESTON, S.C. – With the roof scheduled to be completed on the batting cages Monday, Phase One of the Building Buccaneer Baseball campaign is almost finished. The campaign, created by baseball alumni Matt Brownlee, Kevin Futrell, Hardy Ferguson and Stan Kowalski, started raising money last year with a fundraising drive and golf tournament. The newly covered batting cages will have four, 60-foot cages with removable netting and lights, allowing athletes to practice in inclement weather, and during the evenings. “This is the first of several phases of construction and improvements to our facilities,” said Head Coach Stuart Lake. “I think this really shows the commitment of the school to improve the facilities, which allows us to recruit better student-athletes. I obviously wasn’t here when this campaign started, but I am so thankful to alumni who have stepped up to support us.” In addition to the renovations to the cage, the baseball program will also create tee and soft-toss areas around it for additional hitting areas. Other improvements include moving the bullpens and cutting the grass to create base paths.
