CSU Has Eight Selected to All-Big South Teams

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty running back Rashad Jennings and Gardner-Webb linebacker Jeffrey Williams have been voted the 2008 Big South football Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, by the Conference’s head coaches and media panel, it was announced today by the League office.  Stony Brook running back Edwin Gowins was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while Liberty’s Danny Rocco was voted Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.  In addition, the sports information directors voted VMI’s Jacob Rochester as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Big South also announced its All-Conference first and second teams.  The squads are comprised of 12 offensive and defensive players and five special teams players.  Liberty led the way with 16 selections, including a League-high nine First-team honorees.  Gardner-Webb was second with 12 All-Conference members, followed by Charleston Southern (8), Stony Brook (7), VMI (6), Presbyterian (5) and Coastal Carolina (4).

Gerald Stevenson earned first-team honors as a wide receiver and a kick returner. A Big South and TSN National Special Teams Player of the Week selection earlier in the year, Stevenson broke the school record with 302 all-purpose yards against Wofford. The sophomore from Naples, Fla., was the leading receiver on the team and ranked seventh in the Big South in scoring with 38 points. He finished the year third in the Big South averaging 148.3 all-purpose yards per game and had three multi-touchdown games.

Jake Killeen and Philip Ashley each were named to the first-team defense. It was Killeen’s second time being selected as all-conference after joining the CSU program last year. He finished the year second in the Big South in sacks, and seventh it total tackles among defensive linemen in the league. In just two years, he ranks eighth all time at CSU with 17 career tackles-for-loss and is second in career sacks with 11.

Ashley earned first team honors after setting the CSU single-season and career records for interceptions. The junior from Tallahassee, Fla., is tops in the Big South with six interceptions this year and has 11 career picks. He is also tied for the school record with two interceptions in a game after picking off two passes in the victory over Coastal Carolina. In the middle of the season Ashley had a stretch of three-straight games in which he had an interception.

Alex Bragg earned second-team honors on the offensive line. With the ability to play multiple positions, including center, Bragg played in all 12 games as a senior. The Augusta, Ga., native finished his career with 38 starts and 42 games played, earning all-conference honors two times. 

Justin Witzmann was named to the second-team defense after his final season in the blue and gold. The junior college transfer from Encinitas, Calif., was also named to the all-academic team with a 3.90 career GPA. In two years at CSU, Witzmann played and started in every game, finishing  this year tied for the most tackles-for-loss on the team with eight. He also tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles.

Joining Witzmann on the second team defense is linebacker Andrew McKain. The redshirt-junior from Tucker, Ga., led the team in tackles this year after starting every game. He finished third in total tackles in conference games and posted a season-high 13 stops in the victory over Gardner-Webb. He tied for the team lead with six pass breakups and tied for second with 8.0 tackles-for-loss.

John Paglia rounded out the CSU honorees, earning second-team honors as a place kicker. A sophomore from Ocala, Fla., Paglia set the school record with a 48-yard field goal as part of a perfect 3-3 day against Wofford. He finished third in the Big South in field goals made and hit 10-11 PAT attempts in the first five games of the season. Also performing kickoff duties, he averaged 58.0 yards and had nine touchbacks.
