Bucs Find Success at Niswonger Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Charleston Southern qualified a pair for Saturday’s finals to highlight the first day of competition at the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University.

Freshman Javon Young won his heat of the 60m dash with a  time of 6.81 seconds, edging out former Buccaneer Alonzo Spurley who raced as a professional. Young claimed the third best time in the preliminaries, easily qualifying for the finals.

Levi Brooks posted the fourth-best time in the 400m dash of 48.89, qualifying for the finals while Cornelius Tyler’s time of 51.18 put him in 38th.  Freshman Juan Thompson clocked in at 51.82 which was good enough for first place in his heat.

All four CSU entries in the 200m dash won their heat. Young and Tyler posted the best times of the day with a pair 21.87 second finish, just missing the finals after finishing tied with each other for seventh overall. Brooks wasn’t far behind in 10th place with a time of 21.96. Thompson rounded out the CSU finishers with a time of 22.56 for 44th place.

In the men’s weight throw, James Hayes finished 14th with a toss of 15.95m (52 feet 4.0 inches) while Jean Pierre Poisson placed 21st with a distance of 14.91m (46 feet, 6.75 inches).

The meet will continue with additional field events and the finals on the track at 8 a.m. Saturday.
