KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The Buccaneers (12-17, 7-4) traveled to meet the Volunteers (12-16, 1-9) of Tennessee at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Wednesday night for the first meeting since 1996 between the two programs. The Buccaneers dropped the contest 8-2, while tallying four hits and one homer. Five of the eight Vol runs were earned, while the Vols out-hit the Bucs 11-4. The Vols’ Adkins (2-0) tallied the win on 5.0 innings of work, while CSU’s opener TJ Green (1-3) took the loss in 5.0 innings of work. CSU looked to give the Vols hard time as they held the score in check most of the game, but the Vols would seal their victory in a seventh inning rally. The Vols were quick to jump in the lead taking a 3-0 advantage in the first two innings, while holding the Bucs scoreless until a fifth inning run from Kory Morian. After a solo homer in the top of the fifth, Tennessee’s biggest inning would come in the seventh, crossing four over home plate to close out their eight total runs for the game. The Bucs’ Nick Chinners hit his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence, in the top of the sixth inning giving the Bucs their second run of the game, while starting catcher Blake Hunt tallied the RBI on a ground out in the top of the fifth to cross senior Morian for the first CSU run. Chinner’s homer is the sixth shot in nine games for the Bucs’ bringing the team total to 30 for the season. Chinners and Morian were joined in hits by senior Mark Perry and center fielder Tom Burkett. The Bucs continue their road trip but return to conference play as they head to Rock Hill, S.C. for a three game series with the Winthrop Eagles starting Friday.
