CSU Swept at Liberty; Drops Final Game 4-2

By CSU Sports Information

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Charleston Southern looked to take away the final game of the series from Liberty, but ended up dropping their second consecutive 4-2 contest Sunday, at the Liberty softball field.  Similar to previous games, the Bucs took a 2-1 advantage early on, but the Flames rallied to take the lead in the end.  With the loss, CSU dropped to 19-21 and 5-1 in the Big South while Liberty improved to 14-21 and 3-3 in the conference.

Jamie Wellons led the team with a pair of hits and a run scored.  Megan Lombard, Melissa Adams and Brittany Giannini also chipped in with a hit apiece.  Sondra Vetter picked up the loss for the game to move to 9-6 on the year, after three and two thirds innings pitched and three earned runs.

The Flames reached the scoreboard first, sending out a solo homerun with two outs in the first inning.  CSU bounced back immediately in the second, taking advantage of some Liberty miscues to score a pair after two hits and two errors.  Gail Matsushima started the inning by reaching base on an error and Wellons knocked out a single to send her home.  Adams recorded an RBI single, sending Wellons across the plate and giving the Bucs a 2-1 lead.

Liberty came back and steadily took control of the game, scoring a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  Wellons relieved Vetter in the fourth and threw in the next two innings, allowing one earned run.  The Bucs couldn’t get much going to end the game, with no hits in the last three innings, bringing the final score to 4-2.

CSU returns home for a double header vs. USC Upstate on Tuesday, before heading to Winthrop for another weekend series.
