CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel scored in each of the first four innings to distance themselves from Charleston Southern, taking a 9-2 victory over the Bucs Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
Senior Mark Perry led the way offensively for Charleston Southern (12-21, 7-7) with two of the Bucs’ six hits on the night. CSU used six different pitchers in the loss, with all but one recording a strikeout. Corey Deighan and Tim Murphy each managed to get out of the game without giving up a run.
For the Bulldogs (18-12, 7-5) it was David Greene that did the damage going 4-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and scoring one run. Starter T.J. Clarkson earned the victory on the mound for The Citadel, going six innings and giving up both runs.
A two-out rally in the bottom of the first put the Bulldogs up 3-0 after an RBI single by Chris McGuiness and a two-RBI double by Greene. They would add another run to their lead in the second as McGuiness singled in another run for his second RBI of the game.
After knocking starter T.J. Green (1-4) from the game, a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third gave the Bulldogs a little more breathing room as they took a 5-0 lead.
Green gave up three earned runs on six hits in two innings of work.
The Bucs finally started to make some noise in the top of the fourth inning. Patrick Dolan led of the inning with a walk and two straight singles by Nick Chinners and Tyler Thornburg loaded the bases. Brandon Roberts used a patient at-bat to draw a walk, earning the RBI and putting CSU on the board. Blake Hunt also got a free pass as he was hit by a pitch to plate another run and make it 5-2.
CSU returned the favor and the runs as the first two batters in the bottom of the fourth reached on a hit-by-pitch. A double-steal and throwing error plated one run, while a double by Sonny Meade scored a second run. The Citadel went on to load the bases in the inning with one out before a sacrifice fly by William Ladd plated a third run in the inning to make it 8-2.
Both teams shut the other out until the bottom of the eighth inning when Greene again put one into the outfield for an RBI to make it 9-2.
The Bulldogs were able to close out the ninth and take the 9-2 victory. It is their second factory of the season over CSU. The two teams will take the field again on Monday night at Riley Park for a 6 p.m. contest. Related Item: Box Score
