SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Buccaneers (15-32) traveled to meet the Spartans (13-33) of USC Upstate for the first meeting ever between the two programs.The Spartans outscored the Bucs 10-3 for the win.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they scored runs in the first four innings before the Bucs were able to hold off their scoring frenzy, while the Bucs were hold scoreless until the seventh inning.The Spartans went on to outhit the Bucs 12-9. Senior Tyler Thornburg was the only Bucs to tally two hits on the game, with seven other hits spread throughout the roster, while Derek Smith helped from the plate with a homer and two RBI.
Spartan opener Moyer (3-6) tallied the win from the mound in 7.0 innings of work while the Bucs’ starter, Patrick Dolan (1-3) would tally the loss in 2.0 innings of work.The Bucs would struggle from the mound having seven pitchers in total see action, while the Spartans won with three taking the mound.
The Spartans took an early lead in the first inning with a single run while adding four in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.The Spartans would continue their scoring charge taking a 10-0 lead before the Bucs were able to get on the board in the seventh inning. Senior Keith Hustedt would sacrifice a fly out to right field for two outs, while driving home first baseman Nick Chinners from third for the Bucs first run of the game.
Designated hitter Derek Smith would add another two runs for the Buccaneers dropping a two run homer over the right field fence to bring home Brandon Roberts who reached base on a single earlier in the inning.It is the second game in a row Smith has hit a home run.
The Bucs return to Buccaneer Ballpark for a two game series with the Savannah State University Tigers May 11-12.Both games are slated for 2 p.m.
