Bucs Get Swept by Chanticleers

By CSU Sports Information

CONWAY, S.C.- The Buccaneers (16-36, 10-15) finished out their series with conference foe Coastal Carolina (42-13, 21-5) after a rain delay this afternoon. The Bucs were once again the first to score, but fell to the Chanticleers 3-1.  The Chanticleers’ victory seals their top seed standing for the Big South Tournament set for next week hosted by UNC Asheville at McCormick Field.

The Chanticleers’ opener, Anthony Meo, tallied the win from the plate in 5.0 innings of work and facing 23 Bucs.  CSU’s opener Charlie McCready took the loss in 4.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits.

The Bucs spread five hits over the roster to the Chanticleers’ ten, while senior Tyler Thornburg tallied the single RBI to bring home Brantley Meier who tallied the sole Buc run.

Meier started things off for the Bucs in the first with a walk before advancing to second on a walk to freshman Patrick Dolan.  Meier advanced to third on a fielder’s choice from Nick Chinners that caught Dolan out at second, before Thornburg would sacrifice a fly to center field to bring Meier home from third and advance Chinners to second on a dropped ball after the play.

Being up 1-0 in the first, it is the third time in the series the Bucs have been first to score, but as before, the Chanticleers would tie the game in the bottom of the inning, on a run of their own on a sacrifice fly from David Anderson.  They would take the lead in fourth with an RBI single before adding their final run in the eighth to take the 3-1 victory.

The Bucs will head to the Big South Tournament in Asheville, North Carolina.  Official seedings and times will be announced Saturday evening by the League Office.  Stay tuned to CSUSports.com to find out the Bucs first round schedule.
