Baseball Announces Players' Summer League Placements

CHARLESTON,S.C.- The Buccaneer baseball team announced summer league teams for 10 of its players today. The list includes five different leagues around the country picking up at least one Buccaneer, including the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL), Cape Code Baseball League (Cape), Coastal Plains League (CPL), The All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA), and the Arizona Collegiate Summer League (ACSL).

Charlie McCready, LHP: (SCBL)Spartanburg Blue Eagles

McCready was a regular weekend starter for the Bucs, where he accumulated a 1-5 record with 13 appearances and 10 starts. He finished the season with a 6.12 era in 50 innings pitched while tallying 30 strikeouts.His 50 innings and 10 starts put him third on pitching staff in both categories.

George Schaefer, RHP: (SCBL) Spartanburg Blue Eagles

A local product of Bishop England High School, Schafer red-shirted his first season with the Bucs. Schafer held a 2.91 high school career ERA while tallying a 12-7 record. Schafer was also named to the All-Conference team twice.

Tyler Thornburg, RHP/OF: (Cape) Brewster Whitecaps

Thornburg had an outstanding season for the Bucs, breaking a program record with eight RBI in a single game, and tied records for home runs in a single game with three and runs scored in a single game with five. Thornburg ended the season leading the team in home runs with 12, runs (40), doubles (16), total bases (116), and was second in hits with 62. Thornburg ended the season with a .292 batting average while starting in all 53 games for the Bucs.

Nick Chinners, 1b: (CPL) Columbia Blowfish

Chinners led the Buc roster for the majority of the season form the plate, ending the season with a .339 average in 52 games. Chinners tallied 35 runs while leading the team in hits with 63. He was second on the team in doubles (13) and third in home runs (6) and total bases (96).

Stew Brase, RHP: (CPL) Columbia Blowfish

Brase finished his sophomore campaign making 16 appearances for the Bucs, with one start, totaling 28.0 innings pitched. Brase tallied a season high 5.0 innings of work at Gardner-Webb, and three strikeouts at Tennessee.

Derek Smith, DH/1b: (CPL) Columbia Blowfish

Smith made regular appearances for the Bucs as the designated hitter, hitting two home runs on 20 total hits, scoring six runs and tallying 13 RBI. Smith ended the season with 33 appearances batting .235.

Jesse Cadenhead, RHP: (CPL) Gastonia Grizzlies

Cadenhead lead the Buc pitching staff in innings pitched with 73.2, including two complete games, tallying a 4-6 record. Cadenhead made 16 appearances on the mound with 11 starts tallying 54 strikeouts and ending the season with a 6.60 era. 

Anthony Markham, RHP: (CPL) Edenton Steamers

Markham ended his sophomore campaign second in innings pitched with 60.0, in 13 appearances with 12 starts.He completed the season with a 7.95 era and 2-6 record after striking out a total of 46 batters.

Blake Hunt, C: Arizona Collegiate Summer League

Hunt made regular appearances behind the plate for the Bucs, seeing time in 32 games with 20 starts.  Hunt ended his sophomore season with 13 runs on 19 hits, including four home runs, two of which came in a single game against Chicago State, and 15 RBI.
