Burns, Flemming and Walden Join Sports Information StaffJuly 27, 2009By CSU Athletics CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern has announced a number of changes in the sports information department, including the hiring of two interns and the addition of a full time assistant position. Ryan Burns, Cedrique Flemming and Rob Walden will all join the sports information staff for the 2009-10 seasons. Named the Assistant Director of Sports Information, Burns will return to CSU for his second year with the Bucs after serving as an intern during the 2008-09 year. Burns will continue to work with the volleyball, men’s basketball and softball programs. His duties will also include managing the sports information student workers. Prior to CSU, Burns spent time in the sports information office at his alma mater, Geneva College, located in Western Pennsylvania. He worked primarily with the production of media guides and the writing and distribution of news releases for selected sports. While at Geneva, Burns also participated as a four-year member of the varsity basketball team. Engaged to 2009 graduate of Geneva College, Ashley Archer, the couple is set to be married in July of 2010. Flemming joins the department as a sports information intern, and will serve as the contact for women’s soccer, women’s basketball, baseball and tennis. He comes to CSU after spending his last two years as the graduate assistant athletic media relations director at Bemidji State University, where he was the media contact for the women’s soccer, women’s hockey and softball programs. He earned a bachelor of science degree in print journalism from Kansas State University in 2007, and has also spent time working for Sports Illustrated in New York City, K-State's school newspaper - the Kansas State Collegian, and Scout.com. Walden will also join the CSU staff as a sports information intern, and will head up the department’s video streaming operations, and will assist with the publicity efforts for football, men’s basketball and baseball programs, and will serve as the main contact for men’s and women’s golf. Last year, Walden spent the 2008-2009 season in Brevard, N.C., as the play-by-play voice of the Brevard College Tornados. His duties included serving as play-by-play host for Tornado football, basketball and baseball games on WSQL AM-1240. In addition to his radio work, Rob served as interim sports information director for five months as was the primary contact for the Tornado football, men's basketball and baseball teams in 2009. Rob graduated Summa Cum Laude from Newberry College in May of 2008 with a B.A. in communications and a minor in physical education. While at Newberry, Rob worked for four seasons as a student assistant in the sports information department, serving as the primary tennis contact in 2008. He also was a part of the radio crew at Newberry, calling Indian basketball and baseball games for two seasons on WKDK AM-1240. He has also worked as a sports writer for the Newberry Observer and the host and producer of Around the Town, a weekly television show in the Newberry area.
