CSU Football Preview - Quarterbacks

By CSU Sports Information

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Leading up to the much-anticipated kickoff against the defending BCS National Champion Florida Gators, CSUsports.com will do a position-by-position breakdown of the 2009 Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Today we feature the quarterbacks.

One thing is for sure; CSU will have a different face under center for the fourth time in as many years. Much like 2008 when senior Tribble Reese transferred in to control the offense, a new face does not mean a rookie. Named the Most-Improved Quarterback for the second spring in a row, A.J. Toscano (R-Jr.) has now been through two spring camps as well as the entire 2008 season and looks to hold an early edge for the starting spot. He will have to hold off a charge from transfer Andrew Trudnowski (Jr.), who joined CSU for spring drills after finishing second in the nation in passing last year at LA Harbor College.

“Who starts the Florida game for us will very much depend on the shape each quarterback reports in,” said Coach Jay Mills. “We have great competition and depth at each position, and that is no different at the quarterback spot. We know they have both worked hard and will continue to do so, so our staff will evaluate them daily. It is our policy never to move anyone down in the depth chart, it will be up to the other guys to step up and take the starting role.”

Jordan Belser (R-Fr.) and Brad Taylor (Fr.) have seemingly been overlooked, but Mills is pleased with the way they have reported and both will have equal opportunities to get on the field.

CSU will open the season with a 7 p.m. kickoff in Gainesville, Fla., on Sept. 5. The game will be televised by the Fox Sports Network.
