Postgame quotes from CSU vs. North Greenville

Postgame quotes from Charleston Southern Head Coach Jay Mills, WR Gerald Stevenson and LB Andrew McKain after the 34-0 victory over North Greenville:

Head Coach Jay Mills

On his satisfaction with the victory:
“There’s no question that we’re happy to come away with a win. This job is very labor-intensive, and you work just as hard whether you come out on top or on bottom, so it’s definitely very gratifying to finish on top.”

On North Greenville’s performance:
“We played a North Greenville team that has continued to improve each and every week. I’m very impressed with how hard their guys play.”

On the positive aspects of his team’s performance:
“The most positive thing I can think of is that we never punted the ball. We either scored on each drive or stopped ourselves.”

On the negative aspects of his team’s performance:
“We stopped ourselves a few too many times. We had three turnovers in the game and we didn’t convert a fake field goal that we tried, but overall we kept growing and building and we worked through some rough patches.”

On what he told his team at halftime:
“I told the guys at halftime that we were either going to get better or worse. We weren’t going to stay the same. And I feel like we were better in the second half.”

On the rushing attack:
“Our ground attack really has been improving, and we felt like once we got on a more level playing field that those improvements would show up.”

On the balance his offense showed today:
“I’ve always felt like this team had great potential to be balanced in both the running game and the passing game and that was evident today. That is definitely something we can build upon.”

On the injuries his team sustained during the game:
“We’re going to have to get B.J. (Hackworth) looked at, and Jarrett Johns left pretty early with an injury that we’re going to have to get checked out. But besides that, the injury report is pretty positive, nothing more than the usual bumps and bruises.”

On the improvements his team needs to make:
“There’s no question that we’re going to need to cut down on turnovers and penalties. That’s been our Achilles’ heel so far. What’s encouraging is that those things are correctable.”

On playing against former CSU Assistant Coach Jamey Chadwell:
“It’s always good to see good friends. Coach (Jamey) Chadwell and Coach (Chad) Staggs are quality people and they share a great deal of the responsibility for the success we’ve had here. We’re definitely rooting those guys on as they go forward.”

WR Gerald Stevenson

On the team’s first victory of the season:
“It feels great to get a win. Being 0-3, then to get off the pine, it really feels great.”

On the success of the offense against North Greenville:
“We know the potential that we have on offense, and it definitely feels good to put four touchdowns on the board.”

LB Andrew McKain

On shutting North Greenville out:
“Pitching a shutout feels really good. The last three games, we’ve been giving up a lot of points. We played some good teams, and we give them credit, but at the same time we did not play up to our standards.”

On the defense’s performance against North Greenville:
“Today was very good; there are still some things that we can correct, but it’s always good to get a goose egg.”

On the improvements the defense can make:
“We’ve got to cut down on stupid mistakes; penalties, assignments on the option, making sure guys are staying on their man. Next week’s opponent, Savannah State, runs the same kind of offense, so we need to get better in those areas.”
