CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University shot a 1-over par 285 Tuesday to capture the team championship of the 2009 Wendy’s Invitational, hosted by Charleston Southern University and Coosaw Creek Golf Club. CCU’s Aruka Felgueroso shot a 66 (-5) on the final day to take home medalist honors. College of Charleston, which began the day in the lead, shot a team score of 307 (+23) to finish with a total score of 605 (+37), 19 shots off the pace but good for 2nd place. The University of Memphis, Winthrop University and Carson-Newman College rounded out the top five at the event. CSU began the day in a tie for 4th but shot a 326 (+42) on Tuesday to fall to a 7th place finish. Lady Buc stalwart Olivia Jordan-Higgins began the day as the individual leader in the clubhouse, but finished 2nd after shooting 4-over 75 on Tuesday, good for a two-day score of 145 (+3), five shots back of Felgueroso. Rounding out the top five individually were Jessica Alexander of Coastal Carolina, Ainhoa Nogales from College of Charleston, and Alicia Greer of Coastal Carolina. Alexander shot a two-day total of 147 (+5) to finish on the podium, while Nogales and Greer finished at 148 (+6) to share 4th place. CSU’s Madison Jeter shot a final round 79 to end the tournament with a score of 161 (+19), tied for 28th, while Amanda D'Ostroph shot an 83 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 162 (+20), tied for 31st. Katrin Rumpf shot 89 on the final day, good for a total of 173 (+31) and a 61st-place tie, while Elise Trebaol also shot a Tuesday 89 to finish with a 176 (+34) and a 68th-place tie. Competing as an individual, CSU’s Katelyn Bensch shot a final-day 80 to check in tied for 24th with a score of 159 (+17). Evan Candies carded an 87 on Tuesday and finished tied for 71st, with a cumulative score of 178 (+36). “We’re disappointed in how we played on Tuesday, but obviously we are very proud of Olivia for finishing 2nd,” said CSU Head Coach Kory Thompson. “Overall the tournament was a great success. We had a very strong field, and congratulations go out to Coastal Carolina for winning the championship.” The Lady Bucs have one more event to play in the fall season, as they play at the Pinehurst Challenge, which begins November 2.
