Postgame quotes from CSU vs. Limestone November 13, 2009By CSU Sports Information CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern women's basketball head coach Julie Goodenough speaks about her team's 90-54 season-opening victory over Limestone College Friday night at CSU Field House. On the game as a whole: I felt that Limestone really brought a good game tonight and came out with a lot of intensity in the first half. They were really outplaying us for the first 12 minutes of the game on both ends of the floor, so I really give them a lot of credit. We were able to advantage of some defensive lapses in the last four minutes before halftime that gave us a little bit of a cushion. I was really pleased with our players’ defensive effort in the second half after we tried to change things up a little bit. The defensive intensity was much better in the second half. On the balanced scoring attack: I think it’s going to be hard for people to scout us because we have quite a few offensive weapons and it will be kind of a surprise every night as to who will lead our team in scoring. We’re trying to shoot three pointers and I didn’t think we shot enough threes tonight. If you’re only going to shoot 25 percent then you better get off another ten of them, but I’m really pleased that we did have four players in double figures. We missed some easy shots, but I thought it was a good first effort and a good game for our crowd to watch, and what a great crowd we had tonight. On the two freshmen point guards Helen Terry and Shay Jones: They come in and work hard everyday and yes they do make freshman mistakes but man do they play hard. When you go out and play hard good things are going to happen, and they showed some glimpses of that tonight. On the struggles from behind the arc: Limestone did a great job of not helping off very much in the first half. They were trying to get us to beat our girl one-on-one, and if we didn’t beat our girl then we didn’t really have an opportunity to pass out to our shooters. They did a good job of getting out there and denying our three-point shooters. Our transition game in the second half allowed us to get more three-point shots off. Katie (Tull) had a great game, but Kelsey (Wasmer) needs to shoot more than she did tonight and not be afraid to knock shots down. On the four-player rotation in the post of Ali Schwagmeyer, LeChell Rush, Lydia Johnson and Lakeitha Alston: They all did a good job. When they came off the bench they sparked us with rebounds and good offensive plays. They all four did a really good job. Danielle (Gibson) came in and did some good things for us defensively. Kori (Penick) came in and the first time she touched the ball she scored. Our post players did a nice job for us tonight. On next week’s opponents, UT-San Antonio and Mercer University: UT-San Antonio is very well coached. They play really hard and they do know how to win. They’ve got some very talented players on their team. We have to go back to work and get better defensively. We have to come out and not have defensive lapses in the first half like we did tonight. UTSA and Mercer will both be very good opponents. |
