Mt. Pleasant, SC - Junior Brian Sole snapped a 3-3 tie with a seventh inning grand slam to propel the Charleston Southern baseball team to a 7-4 victory over College of Charleston on Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Sole’s blast to right field helped CSU snap a four-game losing streak and earned the Bucs their first road win of the 2004 season. CSU improved to 6-8 on the season and evened the season series with their cross-town rivals. College of Charleston won a game last week, 7-6, at Buccaneer Field.
CSU starter R.J. Swindle improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing four runs in seven innings. Swindle gave up three runs on four hits in the first inning and allowed 12 hits total on the day. Junior Nino Fasulo pitched the final two innings to earn his first save of the season. Fasulo allowed an unearned run in the ninth and struck out three.
Charleston Southern managed just five hits on the day with Sole providing two safeties. College of Charleston had 13 hits and runners on base in every inning but managed to score just two runs after the first inning.
Charleston Southern hits the road again this weekend, taking on East Carolina in a three-game series in Greenville, North Carolina. Junior left-hander Brad Bissell will start on Friday night, followed by sophomore Bobby Parnell on Saturday and Swindle on Sunday.
