CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tyler Thornburg blasted a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth inning for his 20th career home run as the Charleston Southern baseball team was defeated 13-1 in the series finale with Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
Thornburg finished 1-for-3 from the plate, and also took the mound for the Buccaneers. He fell to 1-1 on the year after allowing six runs on seven hits in just four innings. He struggled with his control for most of the outing, as he struck out three and walked five.
Virginia Tech (4-2) held a slim 2-1 advantage following the Thornburg homer, but the Hokies were able to bust the game open with seven runs in the fifth. The huge inning was capped off by a grand slam from Tim Smalling.
The Hokies were able to tack on three in the eighth and one more in the ninth to earn the series sweep over Charleston Southern (2-5).
Nick Chinners and Matt Still led the way from the plate for the Buccaneers as each went 2-for-3 from the dish. Scotty Radabaugh, Patrick Dolan and Jon Matthews all contributed to the eight hits for CSU.
Tech recorded 12 hits overall, led by Austin Wates who went 4-for-6 and scored twice. Smalling was 3-for-6 and recorded six RBI.
Sean Ryan finished 2-for-2 and six other Hokies collected hits.
Andrew White relieved Thornburg on the mound, and he lasted two innings after allowing three runs on three hits. Anthony Markham also gave up three runs (one earned) and three hits in two innings. Corey Deighan pitched the ninth and allowed one run and two hits.
Joe Mantiply (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory after allowing just one run on seven hits in six innings of work. Jake Joyce, Joe Parsons and Ben Rowen all pitched an inning of relief duty. Joyce was the only Hokie reliever to allow a hit.
Charleston Southern is back in action for a midweek tilt against cross-town rival College of Charleston. The Bucs and Cougars will do battle at 5 p.m. Mar. 5 at Patriots Point, S.C.Related Item: Box Score
