CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston Southern junior left-hander R.J.Swindle struck out a career-high 13 hitters as the Buccaneers won their fourth straight game, defeating Augusta State University, 5-2, at Buccaneer Field on Friday.
Swindle improved his record to 3-2 on the season, allowing five hits, a walk, and one earned run in a complete game effort. The school's career strikeout leader has 22 strikeouts in his last 14 innings. The victory was Swindle's 19th career win, four shy of the CSU career record for victories.
CSU improved to 10-11 on the season while Augusta State, ranked 10th nationally in NCAA Division II, falls to 20-4 on the year. The same two teams will play on Saturday at 1 pm.
Junior outfielder Brian Sole and freshman designated hitter Jason Rose each tallied two hits for the Buccaneers, who managed only seven safeties as a team. Rose had a pair of RBI as well, giving him five RBI in his last two games.
Augusta State got two hits from shortstop Bennett Mayfield and two RBI from designated hitter Dustin Taylor. Justin Walker took the loss for the Jaguars, allowing three earned runs over seven innings, striking out six.
Augusta State took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, getting singles from Mayfield, Garrick McGrath and Dustin Taylor, with Taylor's basehit driving in both runs.
CSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman third baseman Lionel Greene delivered a wind blown RBI double to score Sole and then scored from second base on a grounder to deep short by Brad Woods. Woods beat the throw to first and Greene, never hesitating around third, was able to score when the low throw from the hole was bobbled by first baseman Andy Hudson. Rose then followed with a double to left center, scoring Woods from third.
CSU added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the seventh, with Rose driving in one and Jay Reynolds scoring Rose on a ground out.
The victory marked CSU's first four-game winning streak this season.
