CSU Soccer to Open Big South Schedule Against Liberty on SaturdayOctober 1, 2010by CSU Sports Information
CHARLESTON S.C. – After over a month of non-conference action, CSU is set to kick off conference play tomorrow when they square off against the Flames of Liberty University. The Bucs of Charleston Southern come in with a Big South Conference leading 6-4-0 record and the Flames have an overall record of 3-5-2. CSU owns the lead in the lifetime series at a record of 10-8-1. This is a match up between preseason conference favorites. Liberty, the defending 2009 regular-season champions, received five first-place votes and 94 points as the 2010 women's soccer favorite. The Flames finished ahead of CSU in the poll, as the Buccaneers totaled 87 points with four first-place votes. Despite incurring five losses this season, Liberty is very talented opponent. The Flames have played an extremely demanding non-conference slate. Their record includes losses to in state opponents UVA, VCU, and James Madison. The Flames leading goal scorer is junior Aimee Luurtsema, who has eight goals this season. Other goal scorers include Silvia Betancourt with five goals, and Maria Owen with two. Marky Boyce looks to extend her newest scoring streak to three games. Boyce scored in the Bucs’ first six contests, and her 11 goals put her among the NCAA leaders in Div-I. CSU freshman Emma Krantz is coming off of a week that saw her win her first Big South Player of the Week honors. Kick off is set for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Buccaneer field.
