Navy Wins CSU Fall World Series as Team Wraps Up Fall Practices

By CSU Sports Information

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern baseball program will wrap up their 2010 fall team practices when the students return next week from Fall Break.

The team recently completed its Navy/Gray World Series. This year’s series was a best of three format with all three games being featuring outstanding pitching performances, including a game-three win from World Series MVP Jesse Cadenhead. Jaren Sustar earned the Gold Glove, while Nick Chinners was awarded the Kechel Cup for the best hitter.

“All three games, and really all of our scrimmages throughout the fall have shown tremendous individual efforts,” said Head Coach Stuart Lake. “Our staff feels very good about the team being put on the field in the spring. The new players we brought it have mixed in well with a very veteran group of returners. On the mouth, we have 16 guys on staff with 10 being juniors and seniors, so we feel good that our pitching staff is experienced.”

Game one went to the Gray squad, coached by Assistant Coach Sid Fallaw. It was a pitching performance by freshman Levi Mauldin that led the way. The Navy team, coached by Assistant Coach Jamie Rabon, bounced back in game two behind junior Patrick Dolan. The seniors dominated on the mound came in game three as seniors Cadenhead and Stew Brase combined for the win and save, respectively, for Navy.

Both defenses continued to improve, getting many good plays from every position, including infielders Sustar (3B), Brandon McKinney (SS) and Cody Austin (2B), and outfielders Brantley Meier and Tom Burkett.Offensively, Chinners continued to hit the ball well for CSU.

Off the field, the Bucs continue to serve within the community participating this fall in Summerville’s Miracle League, Habitat for Humanity, Walk for Cure, and assisting with President’s Dinner at CSU. The team also recently announced the dates for its fourth annual Building Buccaneer Baseball Golf Tournament.
