Lady Bucs Fall to Winthrop, 3-0

ROCK HIIL, S.C. – The Charleston Southern volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (25-15, 25-16, 25-19) Tuesday, Oct. 19 at Winthrop. The Eagles (10-11, 7-2 Big South) hit .394 for the set, holding the Lady Bucs (9-14, 3-6) to a .110 hitting percentage.

For the match, Amanda Hill led the Lady Bucs with 11 kills, giving her 1,746 for her career. Tuesday was her 9th straight double-digit kill match.

Kayla Klinger registered eight kills to go with 10 digs. Tricia Rodl entered double-figures in digs with 17. Amy Nokes paced the Lady Bucs with 31 assists, while Cori Holeman posted three blocks. Erin LaVenice registered a career-high four kills.

Becca Toor led Winthrop with a match-high 14 kills, hitting .545, while Sara Felts (.579) registered 11 kills. Kelsey Hall posted 37 assists and 10 digs.

Set one opened in back-and-forth fashion, with Winthrop holding a slim one-point lead at 11-10 after 21 serves. Klinger posted three kills and Amanda Hill added two in the early going. The Eagles outscored CSU, 14-5 to pull away for a 25-15 first-set victory. For set one, WU hit .382, sending down 16 kills, while the Lady Bucs registered 10 kills and 10 attack errors. Toor earned kills on all six of her attempts during the first set.

Winthrop took a quick seven-point advantage at 11-4 in the second set. The Lady Bucs trimmed the deficit to five at 15-10 after two kills by Hill and two from Klinger. The Eagles extended the lead to eight, 21-13, receiving kills from Viola and a Blackman-Toor block. CSU cut the margin to six at 22-16, with Erin LaVenice posting a kill and assisting on a block with Cori Holeman. WU scored the final three points of set two for the 25-16 win and 2-0 match advantage. Winthrop hit .410 during set two, compared with .167 for CSU.

The Lady Bucs seized the momentum early in set three, leading 7-6 after a Holeman kill. Winthrop responded with a 4-0 rally to take a 10-7 lead. A kill by Hill brought CSU to within two points at 12-10, but that was as close as it would get, with the Eagles pulling away for a 25-19 victory to seal the match.

The Lady Bucs will next compete at High Point Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. match Saturday at Radford. Winthrop will play at Radford Friday before taking on High Point Saturday.
