CSU Heads to Georgia for Match Up with Bulldogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The CSU men's basketball team will finish up their nonconference schedule when they travel to Athens, Ga., on Tuesday to take on the University of Georgia in a 7 p.m. contest at Stegeman Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on CSS.

 Series History
Charleston Southern meets Georgia for the seventh time in the teams’ respective program histories. The Bulldogs have claimed victory all six times they have faced CSU. Georgia has outscored the Buccaneers by an average of 43 points per game during the series, which opened with a 122-62 UGA win Dec. 30, 1978. UGA’s 60-point win is tied for the largest margin of victory in the history of Stegeman Coliseum. The Bucs 62 points in that game are the most they have scored in a single game against Georgia to date. UGA has scored in triple-digits three times against the Buccaneers.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Trent Drafts brought CSU to within three points at 41-38, capping an 8-1 run with 12:29 left in the game. The Bulldogs pulled away for the rest of the game.

For the game, CSU was led by Ed O’Neil, who scored 13 points, while Timon Farley (11 points) and Drafts (10) also scored in double-figures. Five Bulldogs scored in double-digits led by Jonas Hayes, who posted a game-high 17 points. Damien Wilkins, nephew of Dominique Wilkins, currently playing for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, scored 14 points in that contest against CSU.

CSU vs. The SEC
Tuesday’s game will be CSU’s 27th meeting all-time against a team in the current membership of the SEC. The Bucs’ only win over an SEC opponent was against South Carolina, 14 years ago to the day, Dec. 28, 1996, an 85-81 CSU win in Columbia. The 1996-97 team would go on to win CSU’s fourth Big South championship, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Gamecocks went 24-8 that season, qualifying as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. USC (eight meetings) is the only SEC team that CSU has faced more times than against Georgia.

Strickland Earns Second Rookie Honor
Sheldon Strickland’s perfect 3-point shooting in the team’s loss to the College of Charleston has earned him his second Big South Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.  The Lithonia, Ga., native was a perfect 7-for-7 from beyond the arc, marking the first time in Big South history a freshman has ever accomplished the feat.  Strickland led all scorers with a career high 27 points in the contest.
