Bucs Rally for 2-1 Win over Ospreys

CHARLESTON, S.C. –Senior captain Nick Chinners had two hits and a run as the seniors led the CSU baseball team to a 2-1 win, their first of the season, over the University of North Florida in Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark in Charleston, S.C.

Brase gave up five hits and one run in 5.1 innings, while Corey Deighan picked up the save by striking out two in the ninth inning. 

Chinners, currently batting .583, went 2-for-3 with two hits and also crossed the plate for the winning run in the sixth inning.  Fellow senior Brantley Meier’s lone hit of the day turned into the game-tying run, while Blake Hunt went 1-for-3 with a double. 

UNF’s Alex Bacon singled up the middle in the second inning and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Corey Bass to give the Osprey a 1-0 lead at the top of the second inning. 

Meier singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Chinners then got on base with a single.  A wild pitch brought Chinners to third and sent Meier across home plate to tie the game at 1-1.  Derek Smith then singled to center field to send Chinners home and put the Bucs in front 2-1. 

Paul Karmeris gave up two runs on five hits and struck out seven over the course of six innings.  Tommy Organ pitched 1.2 innings in relief and struck out two batters before Chandler Jagodzinski came in to close.  Karmeris took the loss.

Bacon went 1-for-3 with one run, while Bass picked up the Osprey’s lone RBI on the day. 

Charlie McCready pitched 1.2 innings in relief, striking out two and getting the win.  Ali Williams pitched an inning, giving up no hits, before Deighan came in for the save.
