SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An early 8-0 deficit didn’t deter the CSU Buccaneers, who staged their biggest comeback since at least 2000 to down USC Upstate 15-13 on Wednesday afternoon at Harley Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Bucs (10-8, 0-0) put up their highest run total of the season to earn a split of their season series against the Spartans. Upstate took the previous meeting by a score of 13-10 at CSU Ballpark on March 9.
Nick Chinners was 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI, while Walt Quattlebaum went 4-for-6 with a run and two RBI. Brandon McKinney was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI as well. The Bucs found themselves in an early hole as the Spartans took an 8-0 lead by the bottom of the second. Chinners, Smith, Matt Still and Quattlebaum all had consecutive singles to start things off offensively for the Bucs and out them on the board at 8-3 in the top of the third. However, a two-run homer by Liput extended the Spartans’ lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Drew Woodall singled to kick off the bottom of the fourth, with McKinney and Meier following his lead. An Upstate error put Jaren Sustar on base and brought Woodall home to put the score at 10-4. Chinners then singled again to drive McKinney and Meier home, cutting the CSU deficit to four. A sacrifice fly from Still sent Sustar home before Quattlebaum singled to drive Chinners home and bring the Bucs within two at 10-8.
The Spartans were able to pick up another run in the sixth, as Gaither Baumgardner walked with the bases loaded to bring Anthony Vacca home to bring the score to 11-8. However, the Bucs were able to cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh. Sustar doubled down the left field line to drive home Ben Qualkinbush, who was pinch running for Woodall. Chinners then singled to drive home Sustar and Meier, tying the score at 11-11.
Deighan held the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the Bucs to take the lead soon after. Blake Hunt singled to right field to drive home the go-ahead run in Still. McKinney singled to left center, with Tom Burkett and Quattlebaum crossing home plate as the Bucs took a 14-11 lead. A wild pitch brought Hunt home to add insure to the advantage at 15-11.
Upstate picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth, as Baumgardner single scored Blake Green to make the score 15-12. A sac fly from Gaison Wiggins brought home Dillon way, but the damage had already been done as the Bucs took the 15-13 win.
