CHARLESTON, S.C. – A ninth inning comeback propelled the CSU baseball team to a 5-4 win in extra innings before a complete game from Jesse Cadenhead for the 3-1 win gave the Bucs the season sweep over the Radford Highlanders in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
The sweep is the Bucs’ first three-game sweep of a Big South team in three years. CSU’s last sweep came March 21-22 of 2008, when they defeated Presbyterian. The Bucs are now 13-11 overall and 3-3 in Big South play, while Radford is 13-10 and falls to 0-3 in BSC action.
Corey Deighan did the bulk of the work for the Bucs in the first game, giving up no runs off of five hits and striking out five in 6.1 innings. However, it was Tyler Vick who picked up his first win of the season, giving up no hits and striking out one batter in 0.2 innings.
Brandon McKinney was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Nick Chinners had a run and an RBI. Tom Burkett was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI, while Jaren Sustar had two RBI in the game as well.
Abram Williams blew the save for the first time this season after recording five saves prior to today’s game. He gave up two runs, one of which was earned, off of five hits in 1.2 innings. Matt Hillsinger was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Robert Lamas went 1-for-3 with two runs for the Highlanders.
Both teams got on the board early in game one of the doubleheader, with Ryan Burgess walking with the bases loaded to score Jeff Kemp and give RU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Bucs countered with a double by Burkett that drove home Brantley Meier to tie things up at 1-1. Jaren Sustar reached on fielder’s choice, scoring Burkett to put the Bucs up 2-1 in the bottom of the first.
The CSU lead was short-lived, as single by RU’s Hillsinger drove home Lamas to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the second. A sac fly from Kemp then put the Highlanders up 3-2. Radford added what they thought may be an insurance run in the fourth, with Lamas scoring on a groundout by Kemp to keep the Highlanders ahead 4-2 in the fourth.
The Bucs worked their way back into the game in the fifth inning, with Chinners picking up a run on a sac fly by Sustar to put the deficit at one. Chinners was also the ninth-inning hero, driving home McKinney to tie things up at 4-4.
After two quick outs, both McKinney and Meier got on base in the bottom of the 10th. Burkett then sent the ball to the shortstop for what looked like an easy out for Radford. However an error by the Highlanders brought McKinney home to give the Bucs the late 5-4 win.
It was going to take a lot for the Bucs to top such an exciting end to the first game, but a complete came from Cadenhead was just the trick. Cadenhead gave up just one run, striking out nine over the course of 134 pitches to lead the Bucs to the 3-1 win.
Offensively, Derek Smith was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Burkett and Alex Tomasovich each added in a run as well. Burkett and Smith were two of the three CSU batter with multiple hits, as Brian Welch was also 2-for-3.
Bobby Polling took the loss for the Highlanders, giving up three runs off of 10 hits and striking out four in 7.2 innings. Hillsinger was 2-for-4 and had Radford’s lone run of the game.
Solid pitching kept both teams off the board for the first half of the second game. Hillsinger finally had a solo homerun in the fifth inning to put Radford up 1-0.
CSU struck back quickly, with Tomasovich scoring on a Radford error to tie the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. A homer from Smith then put the Bucs ahead 2-1 an inning later.
Charleston Southern was able to pad the lead in the eighth inning. Burkett doubled to left field before being driven home by Smith to assure the Bucs the 3-1 lead and the series sweep over the Highlanders.
CSU will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they travel across town to take on the Citadel in a 6 p.m. match up at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston.
