BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Senior first baseman Nick Chinners had a team-high two hits in his return to the lineup, but none of the Buccaneers made it to home plate as the CSU baseball team took an 11-0 Big South Conference loss to Gardner-Webb at Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., on Friday evening.
The Bucs (17-16) fall to .500 (5-5) in conference play. They will return to Boiling Springs on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match up with the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
Chinners, who missed the past five games with an injury, was 2-for-3 on the night, while Walt Quattlebaum was 1-for-2. Matt Still and Derek Smith each picked up a hit as well, as the GWU pitching staff surrendered five hits to the Bucs.
Stew Brase (3-4) took the loss, giving up eight total runs and five earned runs off of eight hits in 3.0 innings. Kyle Ward threw 3.0 innings in relief, giving up two earned runs and striking out two batters.
Aaron Miller was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI for GWU, who moves to 6-4 in the Big South. Zeke Blanton crossed the plate twice for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, while Emilio Pagan got the win on the mound. Pagan gave up four hits and no runs in 7.0 innings while striking out two CSU batters.
Benji Jackson scored on a failed pickoff attempt to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. A sac fly by Dusty Quattlebaum brought Jake Watts home, putting GWU ahead 2-0.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs picked up four more runs in the second, with Blanton crossing home plate first to make it 3-0. John Harris scored on another sac fly, while Daniel Merck and Miller both made it home on a double by Watts to give Gardner-Webb the 6-0 lead.
GWU padded the advantage even more in the third; picking up two more runs when Miller singled to center field, driving home Blanton and Adam McFarland to make it 8-0.
The CSU pitching staff held the Bulldogs scoreless for the next three innings, but the GWU bats were back at it in the seventh. The Runnin Bulldogs’ Quattlebaum singled to start off the inning, then scored on a double by Scott Coleman that also brought home Brad Collins to put GWU ahead 10-0. Coleman made it home himself on a CSU error to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs the 11-0 win. Related Item: Box Score
