By CSU Sports Information

CONWAY, S.C. – A final tune-up before the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Buccaneers traveled up to Conway, S.C. for the Chanticleer Classic, a meet originally scheduled for Saturday that was moved to Friday to avoid weather conflicts.

Anthony Ward finished second overall in the 100m dash, running 11.03, while Marcus Schoultz finished just behind him in their heat, and fourth overall at 11.08. It was the best time of the year for both guys.

Dantwan Spreads ran 21.88 in the 200m dash in the first attempt at the event for any Buccaneer this season. He edged out Cameron Parker, who finished third with a time of 22.18, and Ward claimed fourth by the slimmest of margins, running 22.19.

In the 400m dash, Cornelius Tyler claimed third with a time of 48.77 seconds, 0.01 seconds off the best time by a Buccaneer this year. Lavon Allen ran 50.74 to finish fifth.

Benjamin Bowles took more than a second off his time in the 110m hurdles, running 16.07 in the event on Friday to claim third overall.

Bowles competed again in the discus throw as he prepares for the decathlon at the upcoming conference meet, finishing sixth on the day with a throw of 36.40m (119-05).

In the pole vault, Baxley Crosby cleared a season-best 3.85m (12-7.5) on his first attempt, but couldn’t get over 4.00m, and finished fourth in the event.

Cory Rhodes earned the fifth-spot in the long jump, getting out 6.05m (19-10.25) from the borad on his second jump of the day. It was his best mark of the season.

Rhodes moved up to second in the triple jump, getting out 13.12m (43-0.5) in the event on his fifth and final jump. Rhodes only got two countable marks on the day, but both were good enough for second.

Next up for CSU is the Big South Championships, which will be contested on the campus of VMI on April 21-23.
