ROCK HILL, S.C. - Billy Daniels struck out a career-high 11 hitters to lead Liberty past Charleston Southern, 8-2, Friday night in the first elimination game of the 2003 Big South Baseball Championship at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Flames (15-36) snapped an eight-game skid with the victory, while the Buccaneers end their season at 19-37.

Daniels (6-3) scattered five hits and two runs over 7 2/3 innings of work to earn the victory, and got more than enough support from the Flames’ hitters, who pounded out 14 hits and took a 2-0 lead off CSU starter Robert Parnell (2-5) out of the gate.

The Bucs tied the score in the bottom of the second, but the Flames posted single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and added two in the seventh and one in the ninth for the final margin.

Phil Laurent went 3-for-4 at the plate and collected a pair of doubles to lead the way for Liberty, while Josh Carter crushed a solo home run in the fifth.
