CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior Charlie McCready got more than enough offensive support as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers defeated Marshall (1-3) Friday afternoon for their third straight win.
McCready (1-1) went a career-high 7 2/3 innings on the mound for the Bucs, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out a career-high nine hitters. Brennan Dorsett came on in relief for the last 1 1/3 innings allowing one run on two hits.
Sophomore shortstop Alex Tomasovich and junior third baseman Jaren Sustar provided much of the offensive support, each collecting three hits. Sustar increased his hitting streak to eight games while picking up a pair of RBI. Sophomore outfielder Brian Welch belted a homerun and tallied three RBI as well.
Issac Ballou's RBI single to score Sergio Leon gave Marshall a 1-0 lead in the third but McCready did not allow another hit until the eighth.
Charleston Southern would answer the Herd in the bottom half of the inning. Chase Shelton led off with a double down the left field line and was followed by a Drew Woodall single, putting runners on the corners. Two batters later, Tomasovich tied the game with an RBI single.
After Bobby Ison was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sustar broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to right.
Leading 4-1 in the seventh, the Bucs would turn the offense up a notch. Tomasovich led off the inning with a single. After two wild pitches advanced him to third, Sustar's double down the left field line scored Tomasovich. Welch followed with a double and John Faircloth drew a walk to load the bases for Zach Hagaman, who promptly singled up the middle collecting two RBI’s. Nick Berry then capped off the four-run inning with a single to right, scoring Faircloth.
After Marshall added a run in the top of the eighth to make the score 8-2, CSU answered with a five spot. Welch's three-run blast to center, his second homer of the season, was the big blow of the inning. Pinch hitter Matt Witt also had an RBI single in the inning to finish off the CSU scoring.
