Bucs Crowd Podium, Take Fourth at 2012 BSC T&F Championships

by CSU Sports Information

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Trips to the podium in four events on the final day of action helped the CSU men’s track and field team to a fourth place finish at the 2012 Big South Conference Men’s Track and Field Championships, hosted by Coastal Carolina at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach on Saturday.

CSU accrued 78.5 points at the meet, finishing behind third-place High Point (98 points).  Coastal Carolina was the men’s runner up with 135 points, while Liberty claimed its sixth straight title with 213 points.

Javon Young’s four trips to the podium, a sweep of the 200-meter dash and a four-hour rain delay highlighted the third day of action for the Buccaneers.

The men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team successfully defended their title from last season, winning the event in a meet record time.  Javon Young, Rozzie Johnson, Cornelius Tyler and Dantwan Spreads combined for a time of 39.91 to win the event by nearly eight-tenths of a second.   After waiting out the rain, Tyler and Young would add another first place finish in the 4 x 400-meter relay as well.  The duo combined with Dantwan Spreads and Juan Thompson to run a 3:12.92 in the event.

Young and Johnson took the podium once again in the 100-meter dash, as Young successfully defended his title in that event as well.  Young crossed the line first in a 10.38, while Johnson took third place in 10.67.  Soon after, the Buccaneers completed a sweep of the 200-meter event.  Young again took top honors, finishing with a time of 20.82 for the win.  He was followed by Johnson, who collected second place at 21.14.   Tyler rounded out the podium, running a 21.44 for third place.

In the field events, Richard Landford took 15th in the discus, recording a throw of 42.84 meters.  Zach Pociatek recorded a season-best toss of 35.50 meters for a 21st-place finish.    Matt Smith added a 10th place finish in the javelin with a throw of 50.91 meters.

The awards for Coach of the Year and Performer of the meet will be announced early next week.

Next up for the Buccaneers is the Orange and Purple meet in Clemson, S.C.  The Tigers will host the event on May 4 and 5.
