CHARLESTON, S.C. – Fred Applin was introduced as the new head women’s basketball coach at Charleston Southern on Tuesday morning by Director of Athletics Hank Small at a press conference held on campus in the Strom Thurmond Center.
Applin comes to CSU after serving as an assistant coach at East Carolina University for the last two seasons. Prior to his time at ECU, Applin was an assistant as well as recruiting coordinator at the University of Washington. Applin was also the head coach at Hampton University, and has also served on staffs at Wake Forest, University of Texas, University of Houston, UNC-Chapel Hill.
Small was very complimentary of Applin in his opening marks, saying that Applin’s profile stood out from the beginning of the application process.
Upon being introduced, Applin, who was accompanied by his wife Cora, thanked the entire interview committee including Small, Vice President for Student-Affairs and Athletics Dr. Rick Brewer and President Jairy Hunter in his opening statement.
Applin was very adamant in expressing that his faith played an integral part in landing him at Charleston Southern. He also continued to say that there was a unique situation at CSU in which three things could be done: winning, academics and faith.
Coach Applin expressed his excitement to begin working with his new team, even staying after the press conference to speak with each player individually and take a group picture.
