Lax Rejoins CSU Staff as Wide Receivers Coach

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern Head Football Coach Jay Mills announced the addition of Kirk Lax as wide receivers coach on Wednesday. Lax is a familiar name to CSU fans, as the Summerville native spent the 2008-2010 seasons assisting with the Bucs’ defensive line and secondary. He will take over for Matthew Smiley, who was added to Mills’ staff over the winter and will continue to coach the special teams unit.

“I’m excited about Kirk rejoining our staff,” Mills said of Lax’s addition. “He spent three years on our staff previously and confirmed to me what I felt like I knew all along about Kirk. He not only is an excellent coach who cares about the young men that he works with, but also – most importantly – is an outstanding person. I’m excited about his ties to the community, both professionally outside of the game and within the game of football. We really believe that he will be able to help us continue to transcend to the next level in our program.”

Lax spent last season in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumone, France as head coach of the European Football League’s Les Cougars.

Prior to joining the Bucs for the 2008 season, Lax led Charleston Collegiate to an 11-3 record and the 2007 SCISA 1A State Championship in his lone campaign as the program’s head coach. Lax’s familiarity with the local high school scene is extensive, as he also spent the 2006 season with Charleston Collegiate as its offensive coordinator, helping the team to a 27.3 point per game average and a berth in the SCISA 1A playoffs for the first time since 1999. Prior to his time in the private school ranks, Lax worked the 2004-2005 seasons at Summerville High School, coaching the wide receivers for the JV team while also scouting opponents for the varsity, which captured the 2005 region championship with a perfect 11-0 record.

Lax helped CSU to a 7-5 record and 2nd place Big South finish during the 2008 season as assistant defensive line coach in 2008, before switching to the secondary for 2009-2010. While in that capacity, Lax helped tutor Charles James to FCS All-American honors after intercepting a Big South-best six passes in 2010.

In his post as wide receivers coach, Lax will get the chance to work with a talented returning group led by 2011 First Team Big South member Nathan Perera. Mike Davis finished second on the club with 23 catches, while junior college transfer Corvaughn Archie and freshman Kevin Glears also exhibited promise.
