CHARLESTON, S.C. - Brad Woods delivered a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Drew Grosse from third, to lift the Charleston Southern baseball team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Claflin on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer field.
CSU improved to 1-3 on the season and gave first-year head coach Jason Murray his first career coaching victory. CSU opened the season with three losses at Florida State last weekend.
Woods' game-winning sacrifice came with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth and spoiled a fantastic pitching performance by Claflin starter Lance Miller. Miller allowed one run and five hits in eight innings before giving way to Simeon Rhodes in the ninth.
Five CSU pitchers limited Claflin to three hits, walking two and striking out six. Junior Bobby Parnell earned the victory with a perfect ninth. CSU starter Brad Bissell went three innings, allowing no runs or hits.
Senior outfielder Brian Sole had two of CSU's eight hits on the day. Sophomore Jason Rose tallied CSU's other RBI, belting a run-scoring double in the second to give CSU a 1-0 lead.
